A REPORT OF THE NEPAL WEEKEND 2008
The Nepal Weekend event was held from 22 evening, Friday till 24 August Sunday, 2008 in the de Woensberg Camping, located in the midst of green forests of Huizen. The event was very special this year. This social outing was for the first time organized jointly by Nepal Development Academy, Nepal Samaj Nederland (NSN) and Non-resident Nepali, the Netherlands ( NRN-NL) bringing together all the Nepalese and their friends affiliated to these different organizations. That is why the programme was baptized as Nepal week end and not Nepal Bhetghat, familiar to the habituated members of NDA and NRN-NL.
In total, 91 people comprising 8 children, adults and at times complete families attended this programme, some arriving on the 22 and the remaining on the 23 August at lunch time. This year saw significant changes in the programme compared to the past Nepal Bhetghat: i.e. more sporting activities, BBQ for dinner and a delicious spaghetti for the Sunday lunch in place of sandwiches just to name a few.
The organizing committee (two members each from the respective organizations) had taken care to leave nothing to the hazard in order to make the participants feel comfortable and at home on the camping ground with various activities, free-time and ‘good cuisine’. Although we had no control over the Dutch sky, we were quite fortunate to stay dry and with intermittent sunshine during our entire stay except for the 23 August evening. It rained luckily just for 20 minutes. This had no consequences upon our BBQ and the bon fire programme.
After breakfast on 22/08, participants adventured into various sports: volleyball, table-tennis, badminton, basket-ball, chess and jeu de boules which really was the favourite play and fun for the men. After the lunch-break, children were also taken care of: drawing workshop, ice-cream, of course! Unfortunately, the scheduled panel discussion on ‘Integration of Nepali in the Netherlands’ did not take place as people preferred to relax, chat and enjoy their free time watching the on-going film and documentary projections. The evening was wrapped up with BBQed chicken and typical Nepali dish (daal, bhat, tarkari and of course, a chicken curry to top it all). We all then enjoyed till late hours the Disco and of course the Dohari around the bon fire atmosphere.
On Sunday was the ‘Jungle walk’ under the guidance of Johanneke. People had time to explore a bit of Huizen and its forests. Following a spaghetti Bolognaise (but with mutton) lunch, people started packing and taking leave. Although the number of participants was much less than expected (135), we all enjoyed this coming together. It allowed us to meet old friends and see new faces. Above all, it nurtured a sense of friendship and solidarity and who knows “Pheri Bhaiton la!!”
The organizing committee would like to thank each and every participant for coming and making the Nepal Weekend a good memory. Till next year!
