A large number of Nepalese people and Dutch friends attended the Dashain Party jointly organised by Nepal Development Academy and Non-Resident Nepali Association, The Netherlands on Sunday 28th of October in Amsterdam.
Mr. S. Paudyal, the president of both the organizations opened the ceremony with an explanation of the Dashain mythology and its influence in the Nepalese society. Dashain is the biggest and longest festival. During the ten days of celebration throughout the country, goddess Durga in all her manifestations is worshipped with innumerable pujas and abundant offerings. Devotees visit relatives to share blessings.
According to the Hindu mythology, accepted by many as suitable justification for Durga's wrath, tells of a battle, symbolizing the conflict of good and evil, waged between Goddess Durga and a demon named Mahishasur. In this battle Durga (good) defeats Mahishasur (bad) after ten days of fighting. Today this conquest is celebrated with Vijaya Dashami, meaning ‘tenth day victory’. Vijaya Dashami is also celebrated as the victory of Lord Ram over the powerful demon Ravan.
Nepal is known as a country where there are more festivals than days in a year and more gods and goddesses than people. The celebration of festivals is a part of day-to-day life of the Nepalese people. They enjoy it and are forgetting their sorrows and pain by indulging themselves in merriments welcoming all people to join the occasion irrespective of gender, caste, religion and nationality.
The Dashain celebration in Amsterdam was very unique due to its versatile program and Nepali disco. Not only Nepali modern music and dances, but also rock, rap and African music and dance have been performed. The Nepali disco was one of the highlights of the festivity. The visitors jumped to the dance floor and swigged in typical Nepali music and enjoyed the Dashain party enormously. Despite the success of the event NDA and NRN-NL have shown their disappointments in the catering service which was absolutely not delivered as it had been arranged and expected.
